In XXIII Winter Olympic Games, Kazakhstan plans to take part in nine sports — S. Mussaybekov

Today during a briefing in the press center of the Government, Vice Minister of Culture and Sports Saken Mussaybekov told about the preparations for participation in the XXIII Olympic Winter Games in 2018 in Pyeongchang City (South Korea).

According to the Vice Minister, over 5000 sportsmen and official representatives of more than 80 countries will take part in the 2018 Olympics. There will be 102 sets of medals in 15 sports.

Kazakhstan plans to participate in nine sports. These are biathlon, figure skating, skiing, short track, speed skating, tobogganing, skiing, ski jumping, freestyle (acrobatics, moguls).

Saken Mussaybekov recalled that at the previous winter Olympiads, the Kazakh national team won 7 medals. Among them are one gold, three silver and three bronze medals.

Also, the Vice Minister said that today the team has 23 Olympic licenses: 10 for biathlon; 3 in figure skating; 10 on the short track. The acquisition of licenses will last until January 30, 2018.

"At the moment, our athletes are participating in the World Cup stages and the International Ski Federation (FIS) competitions in speed skating, biathlon, alpine skiing, luge, ski jumping," Saken Mussaybekov said.

The Ministry compiled a list of likely candidates to participate in the 2018 Olympics. These are 50 athletes in 9 sports.

"There are hopes, we believe, we hope. We plan to enter the 25 best countries of the Winter Olympics in 2018," the Vice Minister said.

However, according to the rules of the Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games, the official delegation should not exceed 50% of the number of athletes.

The speaker also noted that during the forthcoming Olympics, special attention will be paid to the timely coverage of the competitions in the media.

In conclusion, Saken Mussaybekov wished the athletes luck and high results.
