Anti-Drug Awareness Month kicked off in Kazakhstan

Today Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan Yeraly Tugzhanov chaired the official opening of the month dedicated to the International Day against Drug Addiction and Illicit Drug Trafficking, which is celebrated annually on June 26.

It was attended by Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Yerzhan Sadenov, representatives of central and local state bodies and public organizations, volunteers.

The main task of the month is to unite society and implement a whole range of anti-drug measures. All of them are aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle, increasing the drug awareness of the population and understanding the importance of participating in preventive work to maintain the health of children, adolescents and young people.

“The Head of State Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, in his Address to the people of Kazakhstan, noted that the spread of drugs, including synthetic ones, poses a great threat to the well-being of future generations. Building a drug-free society is a challenge facing every citizen of Kazakhstan. On May 11, we approved the Roadmap to combat drug crime and improve drug prevention measures for 2022-2023. Prevention is the main element in counteracting drug addiction and drug trafficking. I am sure that by joint efforts we will have a positive impact on the younger generation and ensure a healthy future for our country,” said Deputy Prime Minister Yeraly Tugzhanov.

Speaking to the participants of the event, Yerzhan Sadenov focused on the measures taken by the Ministry of Internal Affairs to combat drug crime and shared the results of the work done.

“In total, over 1,400 drug offenders have been detained since the beginning of the year. About 600 administrative offenses and about 1800 criminal offenses were revealed. About two tons of narcotic drugs have been seized from illicit trafficking,” Deputy Interior Minister Yerzhan Sadenov said.

The holding of a large-scale anti-drug month is due to the need for a wide coverage of preventive measures for all citizens, including minors and youth.

Seminars-meetings, discussions, lectures and conversations with teachers, psychologists, pediatricians, parents on topical and problematic issues of drug use prevention are planned.

It is worth noting that all these events will be held from May 26 to June 26 with full coverage of all regions of the country.

At the end of the event, a training seminar was held for members of the public, NGOs, media and bloggers on drug prevention among young people.
