May 17-19, the XI Astana Economic Forum took place in Astana.

May 16, on the eve of the opening of the Forum, a high-level discussion was held within the framework of the regional meeting between the International Monetary Fund and the National Bank.

The same day, the Prime Minister Bakytzhan Sagintayev held a number of meetings with the forum participants.

Within the framework of the XI Astana Economic Forum, he met with Tao Zhang, the deputy managing director of the International Monetary Fund. During the meeting, issues of expansion and further development of cooperation with the IMF on promoting sustainable economic growth were discussed.

Also, Bakytzhan Sagintayev held a meeting with the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank President Jin Liqun. At the meeting, issues of cooperation with the bank and implementation of joint infrastructure projects in various sectors of the country's economy were discussed. Spheres of energy, transport, logistics, urban and rural infrastructure were identified as priority directions of financing.

During the meeting with Jurgen Rigterink, first vice president of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the issues of implementing current and prospective joint projects in various sectors of the economy, including the mining sector, municipal and transport infrastructure, development of the green economy and renewable energy, improving the global competitiveness of Kazakhstan and other areas.

With Mikheil Janelidze, deputy prime minister, minister of foreign affairs of Georgia, Bakytzhan Sagintayev discussed the issues of deepening mutually beneficial trade and economic cooperation between the two countries in energy, transport and logistics, tourism, culture, health and education, mutual trade in new directions, export of processed and raw materials in the branches of the chemical industry, machine building, construction, agriculture, including Kazakh grain and others. Questions of interaction between state bodies, regions and business communities of the two states, active participation of Georgian companies in the work of the Astana International Financial Center were also considered.

Bakytzhan Sagintayev and the Asian Development Bank Vice President Wencai Zhang discussed cooperation with the ADB under the new ADB Country Strategy for Kazakhstan for 2017-2021 in the five main areas of accelerated technological modernization, improvement of the business environment, expansion of private sector activities, macroeconomic stability, the quality of human capital, institutional changes, security and fighting corruption. A number of key priorities for cooperation on economic diversification, inclusiveness and sustainable growth were considered.

Also on the eve of the XI Astana Economic Forum, the Prime Minister Bakytzhan Sagintayev met with the Chairman of the Board of DP World Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem. The parties discussed issues of cooperation with the company and implementation of joint investment projects in the field of modernization and development of the transport and logistics system, improving the management of Kazakhstan's transport infrastructure, and the integration of information systems used in Khorgos and Aktau to integrate Kazakh terminals into the global logistics chain on six continents.

The Prime Minister held a meeting with Alan Wolff, deputy director general of the World Trade Organization, who arrived in the capital of Kazakhstan to participate in the AEF. The parties discussed issues of further strengthening of Kazakhstan's cooperation with the WTO, effective implementation of the WTO Agreement on Trade Facilitation, and the active integration of the Central Asian region into the multilateral trading system.

Bakytzhan Sagintayev met with Mukhisa Kituyi, the secretary-general of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, who arrived in Kazakhstan to participate in the Astana Economic Forum. During the meeting, issues of integration of Kazakhstan into international trade, introduction of advanced standards and projects, promotion of trade in landlocked countries, as well as improving the financial system and antimonopoly legislation in Kazakhstan were discussed.

On the eve of the Astana Economic Forum, the 23rd meeting of the Berlin Eurasian Club was held on the theme "Privatization program in Kazakhstan - Chances for German medium business?" Participants of the event discussed topical issues of bilateral economic cooperation, noting that Germany is a strategic partner of Kazakhstan in the European Union.

In addition, the results of the contest "I'm Going to AEF-2018," which was organized on the eve of the Global Challenges Summit 2018, were announced on May 16. The winners were awarded on the territory of the Hilton Hotel in Astana. The winners were given the opportunity to visit the AEF free of charge. In addition, the finalists have a unique opportunity to make a photo with one of the famous speakers of the Astana Economic Forum.

 

May 17, XI Astana Economic Forum Global Challenges Summit 2018 started its work in Astana.

President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev took part in the plenary session of the forum "World of Global Challenges."

On the same day, the panel session "Green Economy: A New Model of Sustainable Growth" was held. The Prime Minister delivered a welcoming address to its participants.

At the forum, Bakytzhan Sagintayev held a number of meetings. Among them are meetings with the CEO of Yandex Arkady Volozh, Global Green Growth Institute’s President Ban Ki-moon, Co-Founder of Apple Steve Wozniak, Minister of Industry, Mine and Trade of Iran Mohammad Shariatmadari, Senior Vice President of Nokia Europe Markus Borchert. Issues of mutually beneficial cooperation and implementation of joint projects in various spheres of economy, digitization, introduction of innovative technologies and development of green economy were discussed.

During the meeting with representatives of German companies headed by the Chairman of the German Committee on Eastern European Economic Relations Manfred Grundke, issues of further development of trade and economic cooperation with Germany were discussed, including increasing export-import operations, expanding the range of goods and services supplied, and establishing direct contacts between business circles of the both states.

In the framework of the Forum, a meeting of the board of directors of the Baiterek NMH also took place.

 

On May 18, the AEF plenary session "Practice of Global Changes" was held with the participation of the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan.

On this day, during the AEF Bakytzhan Sagintayev also held a number of meetings with famous scientists, politicians and businessmen.

A constructive exchange of views on issues of technological revolution, urbanization, digitalization, financial revolution, as well as ensuring economic growth and global security in the light of all global trends and challenges was held with the political scientist Parag Khanna.

With the well-known physicist and futurist, scientist and popularizer of science Michio Kaku, the prime minister discussed the achievements of modern science and their implementation in practice, revolutionary steps in the development of artificial intelligence, space, medicine and biology. The issues of high interest of the young generation in the developments of scientists were also touched upon.

Within the framework of the AEF, Bakytzhan Sagintayev also met with the ex-minister of Malaysia, chief executive director of the Malaysian consulting company Pemandu, Idris Jala.

Issues of interaction with government structures and the business community of Malaysia on joint implementation of innovative projects and the exchange of experience in the areas of economic transformation, transformation of government institutions and the development of effective solutions for managing the activities of the state apparatus were discussed.

Also on this day, Prime Minister met with the Chairman of The Boston Consulting Group Hans-Paul Burkner. The issues of long-term and mutually beneficial cooperation with the company in the light of carrying out reforms on diversification and digitization of the economy under the program Digital Kazakhstan were considered.

With the former President of Estonia Toomas Hendrik Ilves, the issues of promoting cooperation with Estonia in the field of transport, agriculture, education, scientific and technical cooperation, mutual investment, development of information and communication technologies and digital solutions were discussed.

May 19, on the final day of the forum, the Strategic Session was held, during which brainstorming sessions were held in six areas of development of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Issues of implementing breakthrough projects and decisions on the following priorities were discussed: institutions and economic policy, human capital, digitalization and information technologies, new money and financial sector, clean energy and green technologies, urban development.
