Total number of saiga in Kazakhstan exceeded 108 thousand this year - Ministry of Agriculture

For 5 months of 2016,  33 cases of illegal hunting of the saiga were observed, as well as purchase and sale of their horns.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, in 2014, there were recorded 79 facts of illegal hunting of the saiga, in 2015 - 107 facts.

To save the saiga population,  Forestry and Wildlife Committee of the Ministry of Agriculture of the RK has also taken concrete actions for international cooperation in this regard: agreements on conservation of saiga were signed with Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Russia. Recently the Ministry of Agriculture in conjunction with the Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan and JSC "Kazaviaspas" held another aerial survey of Betpakdala, Ural and Ustyurt saiga population.

As a result the total number of saiga in 2016 was 108 300 individuals, including the number of Betpakdala population - 36 200 individuals, the Ural population - 70 200 individuals and Ustyurt population - 1900 animals.
