Kazakhstan plans to ensure long-term sustainability of aquatic ecosystems

The draft Concept of Water Resources Management System Development for 2023-2029 was considered at the meeting in the Government chaired by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan Alikhan Smailov.

According to Zulfiya Suleimenova, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, the document aims to solve problems of conservation and rational use of the country's water resources, ensuring a balance between the needs of sectors of the economy and the environment.

"We want to ensure the long-term sustainability of aquatic ecosystems to preserve their supplying, regulating and supporting functions. The draft Concept includes four main objectives: increasing productivity, water quality, resilience and improving water resources management," Suleimenova said.

It is planned that by 2029 Kazakhstan will modernize and automate the network of main and inter-farm canals and carry out a multifunctional survey of all major hydraulic structures.

In addition, additional hydrological posts will be opened, water supply tariffs will be revised and an automated discharge monitoring system will be introduced.

Following the discussion, the draft Concept was approved. Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov instructed the relevant agency to finalize the document taking into account the proposals voiced.
