Government commission on flood preparedness established in Kazakhstan

The issue of operational measures to prepare for the flooding period was considered at a meeting in the Digital Office of the Government under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov.

The Minister for Emergency Situations Yuri Ilyin reported that according to the Kazgidromet forecast, in the south and south-east of the republic from January 31 to February 4 are expected heavy rainfall in the form of rain and sleet, as well as rising temperatures. According to him, given the accumulated moisture reserves, this may provoke active snow melting, the formation of meltwater, weakening of ice phenomena and the rise of water in rivers.

In this regard, Almaty, Turkestan, Kyzylorda, Zhambyl and Zhetysu regions have been ordered to activate their civil protection units since January 30.

Prime Minister said that the akimats of the regions, together with the Ministry of Emergency Situations should take all necessary immediate measures.

"Now we need to go into high readiness mode for the flooding situation. We see that because of the weather conditions, the threat is increasing sharply. A special governmental commission headed by First Deputy Prime Minister Roman Sklyar will start working in this direction to enhance coordination," Alikhan Smailov said.
