Experimental Gas and Coal Chemistry Complex "Kazakhstan" tested on Saryadyr coal mine

Director of RI for Chemistry of Coal and Technologies, Academician of KazNANS, Bolat Yermagambet, told at the briefing in the press center of the Government about promising developments of our scientists on coal chemistry presented at Expo-2017.

According to the RI Director, International Exhibition Expo-2017 held in Kazakhstan has not only represented our country to the world, but also opened the way for Kazakhstani science.

Every year, coal production in Kazakhstan exceeds 100 million tons, and only 5-7% of this figure is processed—in metallurgic industry for production of coke, char, gas and electric power. In perspective, it is necessary to send up to 10 million tons of coal for chemical processing and produce not only motor fuels, but very important products with a high added value, the scientist considers.

The advantage of coal gasification process is the absence of harmful effects on the atmosphere, also, after the burning, it is possible to extract rare and rare-earth metals and other valuable components.

Coal is a unique fuel and energy raw material, but it is also possible to get many products, such as motor fuels, polyethylene, polypropylene, ethyl acetate, acetic acid and more than 300 titles of other chemical substances. Despite the fact that coal is a solid substance, diamonds and brilliants can be produced from it. Also, from synthetic gas processing, it is possible to produce soot, carbon nanotubes and carbon nanofibers from coal. Adding 1 gram of nanopowder to a metal can improve its hardness 100 times. From coal, it is possible to receive coke pitch.

"In our country, there is a scientific, production and personnel potential for coal processing. So, the scientists of the Research Institute for Chemistry of Coal and Technologies, in 3 years, on the basis of their developments, created the Experimental Gas and Coal Chemistry Complex 'Kazakhstan' on Saryadyr coal mine. The complex is designed for testing new technologies for processing coal products.

The technology has been developed by the domestic scientists and protected by several patents of Kazakhstan and the Eurasian patent. Chemical instruments and equipment of the mini-factory are made at the Kazakhstani plant 'Petropavlovsk Plant of Heavy Machine Building' JSC and have quality certificates. Installation, start, adjusting are also carried out by Kazakhstani enterprises. This proves high professionalism of our domestic scientists and specialists, as well as the interest of business,” B. Yermagambet noted.

In perspective, in 2-3 years, the plan is to process up to 2 million tons of coal for receiving organic fertilizers and nanocomposite materials at the expense of investment.

For the further development of coal chemistry, scientists of RI are proposing the development of the Target Republican Science-Technology Program on coal chemistry, as well as the creation of industrial consortia for convergence of the state, business and science on the basis of gas coal and chemistry complex “Kazakhstan”  LLP “Institute for Chemistry of Coal and Technologies” at the Saryadyr coal mine on the principle of public-private partnership.
