Kazakh exhibition “The Great Steppe: History and Culture" opens in Uzbekistan

April 11, 2019, in honor of the opening of the Year of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the Republic of Uzbekistan, the State Museum of Art of Uzbekistan hosted the grand opening of the exhibition “The Great Steppe: History and Culture,” organized by the National Museum of Kazakhstan with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Sports of Kazakhstan.

Director of the National Museum of Kazakhstan Almaz Nurazkhan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Kazakhstan to the Republic of Uzbekistan Darkhan Satybaldy, Vice Minister of Culture of Uzbekistan Kamola Akilova, Director of the State Museum of Arts of Uzbekistan Vasila Faiziyeva took part in the opening ceremony of the exhibition.

Before the exhibition, a press session was organized for the media with the participation of official representatives of the two states.

At the press meeting, issues of the museums of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan were discussed, areas of cooperation in the future were outlined, the significance of cultural interaction between the two fraternal states was discussed.

The aim of the exhibition “The Great Steppe: History and Culture” is to familiarize the residents of a friendly state with the history and cultural heritage of the Kazakh people.

To date, the project has been successfully implemented in countries such as Belarus, Azerbaijan, Russia, China, Poland, South Korea, and the Republic of Tatarstan. The Golden Man exhibition in these countries was visited by over one million people. In general, the project will be implemented within three years, until the end of 2020, the exhibition will visit about 20 countries of the world. This year the exhibition is scheduled in the museums of Malaysia, Italy, Turkey and Georgia. Next year it is planned to hold an exhibition in the museums of the USA, Austria, France, Switzerland and Germany.

At the opening ceremony of the exhibition, the Director of the National Museum of Kazakhstan Almaz Nurazkhan thanked the staff of the State Museum of Art of Uzbekistan for the warm welcome and invitation.

“The project of the exhibition ‘Golden Man Procession in the Museums of the World’ was organized within the framework of the First President’s program ‘Rouhani Zhangyru’ by Elbasy Nursultan Nazarbayev, and today it is the seventh state in which we are presenting this project. Our peoples have similar history, traditions, cultural values ​​and religious convictions, in connection with which, I think, the Uzbeks will really like our exhibition,” said Nurazkhan.

A landmark exhibit at the State Museum of Art of Uzbekistan is the reconstruction of the Golden Man in clothing embroidered with gold plaques, in a special conical headdress, which is decorated with golden plates in the form of golden arrows, snow leopards, argali, horses and birds, and a collection of archaeological finds from the era of the early Iron Age (V – IV centuries BC), accompanying the burial of this notable Saka young warrior (according to archaeologists his age is 17-18 years old), a headdress with a snow leopard, argali, horse and birds.

In addition, the unique values ​​of the Great Steppe and the archaeological finds of the Saksky Taksay barrow (West Kazakhstan region), Taldy-2 (Karaganda region) and Berel (East Kazakhstan region) are presented here. A special place in the exposition is found in a silver bowl with an inscription found among the kurgan of Issyk mound, made in runic letters, the oldest written writing found on this territory.

In total, the exhibition features 127 items from the funds of the National Museum of Kazakhstan The masterpieces of ancient and medieval art of Kazakhstan presented at the exhibition are only a small part of the works of the nameless masters of the past, reflecting the originality of the heritage of the Eurasian steppe culture.
