Prime Minister Bakytzhan Sagintayev met with the Secretary-General of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Zurab Pololikashvili.
During the meeting, issues of further development of Kazakhstan's tourism industry on cooperation with UNWTO were discussed. The directions of implementation of joint investment projects, preparation of tourist guides, rendering assistance in the framework of the UNWTO Silk Road Program, cooperation in issues of mutual interest in the field of marketing and communications were considered.
For reference: UNWTO is the United Nations agency that develops sustainable and generally accessible tourism, was established in The Hague in 1925 as the International Congress of Official Tourist Traffic Associations (ICOTT). The members of this leading international organization in the field of tourism are 158 states, 6 associate members and more than 500 affiliated members among the leading tourism companies.
After the Second World War, the organization was renamed the International Union of Official Travel Organizations (IUOTO). In 1974, IUOTO was transformed into the World Tourism Organization. In 2003, UNWTO received the status of a specialized agency of the United Nations and subsequently became known as UNWTO.
Kazakhstan joined the organization in 1993. During 25 years of UNWTO membership, a number of major international events and joint projects in the tourism field were held.
