Alikhan Smailov discusses new investment projects in Kazakhstan with EBRD and EIB management

Within the framework of the European Union-Central Asia Economic Forum held in Almaty, the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Alikhan Smailov held meetings with the President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development Odile Renaud-Basso and Vice President of the European Investment Bank Teresa Czerwińska.

During the talks with the head of EBRD the issues of implementation of major investment projects in Kazakhstan, including reconstruction of roads, modernization of sewerage and wastewater treatment facilities and power capacities were discussed.

Alikhan Smailov noted that Kazakhstan highly appreciates the strategic nature of interaction with the Bank and the contribution it has made to the development of the republic.

"Currently we have close ties, affecting a wide range of economic issues, which we intend to further develop. I am sure that cooperation between Kazakhstan and the EBRD can be taken to a new level," the Prime Minister said.

So, just the other day the annual meeting of the EBRD Board of Governors, during which Kazakhstan was devoted to a separate investment session. Alikhan Smailov expressed confidence that this would also give a new impetus to investment cooperation between Kazakhstan and foreign partners.

"The Government of Kazakhstan expresses its readiness to deepen partnership with the EBRD on the widest range of issues of mutual interest," he stressed. 

In turn, Odile Renaud-Basso noted that the EBRD is very involved in work in Kazakhstan.

"We will be glad to continue our cooperation. Our priorities continue to be projects on development of green energy, private sector and infrastructure. In addition, we continue to contribute to the development of the country's banking sector," Odile Renaud-Basso said.

At a meeting with Teresa Czerwińska the issues of cooperation in the transport and logistics sector and agro-industrial complex, in particular the implementation of investment and technological projects were discussed.

Prime Minister said that Kazakhstan appreciates the desire of the European Investment Bank to expand cooperation with our country. In this regard, opening of an EIB office in Kazakhstan can significantly expand the Bank's investment portfolio and presence in the region.

"The Government of Kazakhstan expresses its readiness to deepen its partnership with the EIB on the widest range of issues of mutual interest. One of the top priorities is to stimulate the development of the green economy," Alikhan Smailov said. 

He also called on the EIB to consider closer cooperation in terms of green financing and exchange of innovations with Astana International Financial Center.

In turn Teresa Czerwińska noted that Kazakhstan has proven to be a good partner in the field of economic cooperation. 

"We have been working in the region for a long time and plan to further deepen cooperation in the direction of green economy. This concerns the production and transmission of green energy, improving the energy efficiency of various facilities and the transport sector. This requires the creation and development of the necessary infrastructure. We are also ready to work more closely with medium-sized enterprises," Teresa Czerwińska said.
