Flood Prevention Measures Strengthened in Akmola Region Ahead of Peak Flooding

Deputy Prime Minister Kanat Bozumbayev, during his working visit to the Akmola Region, together with the regional Akim Marat Akhmetzhanov, inspected flood prevention measures in the Astrakhan, Shortandy, Arshaly, Tselinograd, and Atbasar districts.

The Deputy Prime Minister examined a new protective dam in the village of Zhibek Zholy in the Arshaly district, which stretches 6.3 km. The structure will solve the long-standing flood problem and provide protection to nearby villages with a total population of 15,000 people.

In the Shortandy district, the “Damsinskaya” dam has been repaired. Reconstruction of the sluice gates was carried out to regulate up to 5 million m³ of water in the Damsa River and protect the villages of Damsa, Shortandy, Stepnoye, and Nauchny.

Kanat Bozumbayev also inspected the protective embankment and checked the work on cleaning the bed of the Zhabay River in the city of Atbasar. To date, a 7.2 km section of the river has been cleared. Work continues on deepening, widening, and straightening the riverbed, and a protective dam is being built near the city.

In addition, the construction of a road bridge on the “Atbasar – Sochinskoye” highway has been completed on a regularly flooded section. This has solved the problem of disrupted transport access during floods for 2,000 residents of four settlements in the Atbasar district.

The Deputy Prime Minister then familiarized himself with the work on straightening, cleaning, and deepening the Kalkutan River near the village of Stary Koluton in the Astrakhan district. This year, implementation began on a project to reinforce the banks and deepen the Koluton River over a length of 20.8 km. To minimize flooding risks to the villages of Koluton, Stary Koluton, and Yenbek, the major overhaul of the “Kyzyl Zhuldyz” dam is nearing completion. The dam is capable of holding up to 17 million m³ of meltwater.

In the Tselinograd district, Kanat Bozumbayev discussed with the akimat the construction of a road bridge on the emergency section of the regional road “Akmol – Nuresil – Talapker,” which will allow the completion of the project to straighten the bed of the Esil River. The Vice Prime Minister also heard a report on the flood prevention measures carried out in the Tselinograd district.

In total, flood prevention measures in the Akmola Region cover 163 settlements and 32 sections of roads. The threat of flooding has been eliminated in 70 settlements. In the remaining areas, the risk has been minimized. Over the past two years, 718 families have been relocated from flood-prone zones.

The forces and resources of the civil protection services have been put on high alert. This includes 2,500 personnel, over 1,000 units of equipment, about 400 motor pumps, and 37 watercraft. The necessary stock of inert materials, sandbags, and fuels and lubricants has been prepared.

Since March 15, flood prevention headquarters have been operating around the clock. For constant monitoring, 19 drones have been deployed at dangerous sections.

According to the Republican State Enterprise “Kazhydromet,” the peak of flooding in the Akmola Region is expected after March 30. According to modeling in the “Tasqyn” information system, settlements in the Astrakhan, Atbasar, and Bulandy districts are at risk.

“Our task is to meet the peak of flooding fully prepared. All preventive measures must be completed in the shortest possible time. We need to work ahead of the curve and ensure full readiness of settlements in the risk zone,” Kanat Bozumbayev emphasized.

The Vice Prime Minister instructed to ensure round-the-clock snow removal, accelerate the cleaning of riverbeds and water passage structures in flood-prone areas, check temporary accommodation points, prepare the necessary reserve of equipment and materials, and promptly inform the population.
