First Deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Roman Sklyar Takes Part in Celebrations Marking 70th Anniversary of Baikonur Cosmodrome

The city of Baikonur—a unique scientific and engineering hub and a symbol of humanity’s leap into space—marked its 70th anniversary with a grand celebration. The jubilee was not just a festive occasion but a major event that underscored the historic significance of Baikonur and its role in international cooperation.

The Presidents of Kazakhstan and Russia congratulated the residents of Baikonur via video link. In his message, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev praised the city’s importance and expressed gratitude to all those who contributed to its legacy over the years.

“I congratulate you on the 70th anniversary of the Baikonur Cosmodrome—the world’s oldest international spaceport and the cradle of global astronautics. We take special pride in the fact that the world’s largest space harbor is located on Kazakh soil. From here, our national heroes Toktar Aubakirov, Talgat Mussabayev, and Aidyn Aimbetov ventured into space. I would like to extend special thanks to the residents of Baikonur. Your dedicated work and careful preservation of the legacy of the space pioneers deserve the deepest respect. I am confident that Baikonur will continue to serve as a launchpad for great discoveries and a source of innovation for future generations,” the President of Kazakhstan emphasized.

The celebrations were attended by senior officials from Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation, Roscosmos State Corporation, the Baikonur city administration, veterans and current professionals from the space sector, honored guests, and local residents.

First Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan Roman Sklyar delivered a welcome address. He highlighted Baikonur’s unique contribution to space exploration, stating:

“The cosmodrome has been, is, and will remain a site of breakthrough ideas and international cooperation,” Roman Sklyar noted.

As part of the anniversary events, award ceremonies were held, honorary citizenships of Baikonur were presented to distinguished industry professionals, key facilities of the Baiterek Space Complex were toured, and meetings with leaders of relevant organizations took place.

The celebration concluded with a concert at the “Desyatiletiye” Stadium, bringing together all those for whom Baikonur is more than just a location on the map—it is a part of their personal and professional history.

The 70th anniversary of Baikonur served as a vivid affirmation of its historical mission—to remain the heart of space exploration and a source of inspiration for future generations.
