New measures to combat addiction in Kazakhstan to be adopted by Government

Kazakhstan is planning to adopt a number of new measures to combat gambling addiction. The relevant legislative amendments are currently under consideration in Parliament. This was announced by Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Alikhan Smailov at a briefing in the Majilis.

Head of the Government noted that in recent years the problem of ludomania (gambling addiction) has become increasingly large.

"We see that 40% of divorces occur for this reason. It turns out that ludomania has now taken the 2nd place after alcoholism and drug addiction among the causes of divorces in our families. It has become a big problem," Alikhan Smailov said.

In this regard, on the instructions of the Head of State, the Government has developed appropriate regulations aimed at combating ludomania.

"First of all, it is a ban on advertising of bookmaker offices, totalizators and online casinos. The second is an increase to 25 years the permissible age for participation in gambling. It also provides for a ban on participation in games for persons who are in the unified register of debtors, child support defaulters and persons who have overdue debts on bank loans," Prime Minister said.

According to him, these and other measures are aimed at reducing the severity of the problem of ludomania in Kazakhstan.

"It really has become such a mass character. As for the timing of introduction of the relevant norms into legislation, it will depend on how quickly they will be adopted by Parliament. I think that in the near future," Alikhan Smailov concluded.
