Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov held a meeting on the development of Almaty Airport as part of the implementation of the Head of State’s instructions to create an international air hub.
TAV Airports Holding CEO Serkan Kaptan and Almaty International Airport President Göker Köse reported on the progress of the Horizon strategic development program through 2050. Currently, works are underway on the reconstruction of the domestic terminal, the construction of a modern de-icing platform, soundproofing of nearby residential buildings, and other projects.
The overall concept provides for the creation of a system of three runways with a full reconstruction of the main runway, the construction of a cargo apron, logistics and warehouse complexes, and modern passenger infrastructure. The modernization will increase the airport’s annual capacity to 55 million passengers and 500 thousand tons of cargo by 2050. At present, the airport serves more than 12 million passengers per year and accounts for about 70% of Kazakhstan’s total air traffic.
The management of TAV Airports Holding reported that $260 million has been invested to date and confirmed its readiness to reinvest airport profits to ensure the timely completion of all project stages.
Olzhas Bektenov noted that Almaty Airport is part of the integrated ecosystem being developed under the President’s instruction in six cities of Kazakhstan. He emphasized the importance of the timely completion of all works to create next-generation infrastructure and increase the airport’s capacity.
To address accessibility and ensure convenience for citizens, issues were considered regarding the creation of a ring road around the airport territory connecting the city’s main highway, the Big Almaty Ring Road (BAKAD), the cargo complex, and the main airport entrance, providing quick access. Attention was also given to ensuring stable conditions for aviation fuel supply and storage.
Following the meeting, the Prime Minister instructed relevant ministries and the Almaty city akimat to maintain strict control over the quality and timely completion of the reconstruction.
