Punishment for illegal felling of trees to be toughened in Kazakhstan

At the government session chaired by Prime Minister Askar Mamin, issues of protection and reproduction of forest resources were considered.

Minister of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources Magzum Mirzagaliyev, Akims of the Kyzylorda region Gulshara Abdykalikova, Akmola region Ermek Marzhikpayev, Atyrau region Makhambet Dosmukhambetov presented their reports.

The total area of the state forest fund of the Republic of Kazakhstan is 11% of the country's territory (over 30 million hectares). The forest cover of the republic is 4.8%.

The Head of State has set the task of planting 2 billion trees in the forest fund and 15 million in settlements within five years. This will increase the level of forest cover and improve the environmental situation in the country within the framework of the Bonn Challenge Global Initiative, which Kazakhstan joined in 2018.

To ensure a significant increase in the green fund of the Republic of Kazakhstan in December 2020. The government will submit to the Parliament a bill on the conservation and rational use of flora. It aims to regulate relationships, as well as strengthen law and order in the use of green space.

Amendments have been developed to the Administrative and Criminal Codes, which toughen the liability for illegal cutting of trees. At the same time, it is planned to increase the norms for compensatory planting instead of felled trees.

The prime minister instructed the Ministries of Ecology, Agriculture, Industry, Finance, together with the regional akimats, to develop a Comprehensive Plan for Reforestation and Afforestation within two months.

Akimats of the regions were instructed to take measures to monitor, inventory, control the condition and use of green spaces in settlements and the state forest fund, to strengthen the material, technical and staffing of forestry services.
