At the Government session chaired by Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov, Deputy Minister for Emergency Situations Kegen Tursynbayev reported on measures taken to protect settlements from floods.
All flood-prone areas and hydraulic structures were taken under control, the implementation of flood control measures was checked.
"In the regions 590 kilometres of protective dikes and ramparts were erected, repaired and strengthened, 164 kilometres of drainage systems were repaired and built, 658 kilometres of canals and ditches were constructed. On the sections of riverbeds 360 km of bank reinforcement and dredging have been carried out, 190 km have been cleaned," the Deputy Minister said.
According to him, since February 10 in Kazakhstan on the basis of the Command Centre the Operational Flood Control Headquarters of the Ministry for Emergency Situations with the involvement of representatives of the Ministries of Water Resources, Internal Affairs, Transport, Digitalisation and Kazgidromet has been deployed. Similar headquarters are functioning in the regions.
In general, the work carried out has minimised the risks of waterlogging in most of the country.
"Thus, in the south and west, the flood is complete, flooding of settlements has not been allowed. Last week, due to a large inflow of melt water and rain, there was flooding of residential houses in Akmola region. The existing culvert systems could not cope with such a volume of water. This required additional forces and means from the city of Astana and Karaganda region, as well as military units of the Ministry," Kegen Tursynbayev explained.
Immediate evacuation of citizens was carried out, rescue and emergency work was carried out.
For the settlements of Akmola region, temporarily left without transport communication, a ferry has been organised, there is a stock of food. Currently, the water level in local rivers is decreasing.
According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the next stage of flooding is expected in North and East Kazakhstan regions, where preventive measures are actively continuing. Earlier, reserve forces and means, including military units, were sent to these regions. The situation is under control.
Since the beginning of the flood period, about 4.3 million cubic metres of water have been pumped out across the country, over 600,000 sacks have been laid, and over 800,000 kilometres of ditches have been cleaned.
383 people were evacuated in advance. Over 51,000 farm animals were driven away to safe places. All of them have been returned to the farmsteads. 176 overflows and 25 washed out areas were registered on motorways. Overflows on 21 road sections and 5 washed-out sections remain under control.
Coordination of flood control measures and daily monitoring continues.
