10 Thousand km of Roads and 124 Railway Stations to Be Modernized in Kazakhstan

At the Government session chaired by Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov, issues of implementing the instructions of the Head of State given at the joint session of the chambers of Parliament were considered. Minister of Transport Yerlan Sauranbayev delivered a report on the development of the country’s transport and logistics potential.

According to him, in accordance with the President’s strategic tasks, the ministry is ensuring the advanced development of the transport sector, the total output of which has tripled over the past five years. Special priority is given to railway infrastructure. To increase the capacity of steel highways, construction of the Moyynty – Kyzylzhar and Darbaza – Maktaral lines is being completed this year. At the same time, the ministry is starting the implementation of a number of new projects, including laying third tracks on the Astana – Karaganda direction and second tracks on the Arys – Kazaly section. Modernization of the Kyzylzhar – Shubarkol and Inderbor – Makat railway branches is also planned.

At the same time, the Government has been presented with a unique large-scale program for the modernization of railway stations, which has no analogues in all the years of the country’s independence. The project covers 124 stations in all regions of the republic, and work on the facilities is being carried out strictly according to schedule.

“To improve the quality of the road network, an instruction was given in 2024 to repair 10 thousand km of roads. Last year we successfully completed the repair of 5 thousand km, and work is proceeding ahead of schedule. Today, seven road corridors are functioning in the country, providing strategic transport links at the international level. By 2029, a number of major infrastructure projects will be implemented. Over the past 5 years, the volume of transit freight transportation by road has doubled and reached 6 million tons, while revenues from this direction amounted to 1.5 trillion tenge,” the Minister emphasized.

To further increase the potential of road transportation, a set of technological solutions is being introduced, including the launch of a republican video monitoring system, total digitalization of processes, and the development of unmanned transport.

In addition, changes will affect the aviation sector – over the next 3 years, a complete modernization of airport infrastructure will be carried out. One of the urgent tasks is the construction of a new capital airport, where preparatory work is already underway by the Astana akimat with the planned start of construction next year. Overall, the focus on the development of air hubs has been shifted to 6 key airports of the country, where all necessary institutional and infrastructural conditions are being created, and a significant part of the work on modernizing air harbors is carried out through attracting private investment.

In order to strengthen transit potential and integrate Kazakhstan into international logistics, the state has made strategic decisions on the development of cargo aviation, for which a specialized five-year plan has been developed.

In the maritime sector, within the framework of the development of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR), active expansion of port infrastructure continues. On the Caspian Sea, projects are being implemented for the construction of a container hub, the erection of transshipment terminals, and dredging works, which will significantly increase the capacity of the country’s sea gates.
