Alikhan Smailov offers Cuban Prime Minister to discuss Agreement on short term visa-free travels

The Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Alikhan Smailov held talks with the Prime Minister of Cuba Manuel Marrero Cruz. The meeting was held on the margins of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council in Sochi, Russia.

As Alikhan Smailov noted, Kazakhstan and Cuba demonstrate openness to strengthening and deepening bilateral cooperation. In particular, this is reflected in the fact that the level of the republic's diplomatic mission in Cuba was upgraded to a full-fledged embassy.

"The trade turnover between our countries has the dynamics to increase. In this regard, we support joint work to identify priority areas of trade and economic cooperation and possible joint projects," the Head of Government said.  

He also added that the countries have great potential for the development of cooperation in pharmaceutical industry and biotechnology. So, at present there is already some interaction between the relevant companies of Kazakhstan and Cuba.

"We hope that this will lead to concrete results in the future," the Prime Minister stressed.

Alikhan Smailov also outlined the importance of consistent expansion of the bilateral legal framework and proposed to discuss an agreement on bilateral visa-free short-term travels of citizens of the two countries.

For his part, Manuel Marrero Cruz expressed Cuba's interest in developing deeper economic ties with Kazakhstan.

"Healthcare is one of the potential areas of possible cooperation between our countries. Here we are talking about pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry, medical services, academic exchange. There are different areas related to this industry, which we can develop," Manuel Marrero Cruz said.

He also indicated an interest in strengthening cooperation in such areas as the metallurgical and chemical industry, the production of building materials and agriculture.

In conclusion, Manuel Marrero Cruz invited the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan to visit Cuba at any convenient time.
