During a working visit to Karaganda Region, Deputy Prime Minister Kanat Bozumbayev inspected the region’s preparedness for the flood season, assessed the condition of key hydraulic structures, and visited settlements in Bukhar-Zhyrau, Karkaraly, Shet, and Abai districts that are at risk of flooding.
Along the Nura River, the Deputy Prime Minister inspected the villages of Kokpekty, Baikadam, Petrovka, Sarytobe, Botakara, and Sheshenkara, as well as the Baikadam and Minkovskaya dams and the Ashchisu Reservoir. Along the Sherubay-Nura River, he reviewed the settlements of Karashoky, Besoba, Aksu-Ayuly, Kairakty, Nurataldy, Aksu, and Shopa, and examined the condition of protective embankments in the village of Krasnaya Polyana. In Abai District, he visited the villages of Yuzhny, Kulaigyr, and Taszaemka, as well as the Sherubay-Nura and Zhartas reservoirs. In addition, Kanat Bozumbayev familiarized himself with the operation of the Samarkand Reservoir hydraulic facility and inspected protective embankments in the village of Chkalovo.
According to the Akimat of Karaganda Region, the main flood prevention measures have been completed, with work continuing in the city of Temirtau. A total of 25 kilometers of protective dams and embankments have been constructed and reinforced; more than 28 kilometers of flood-prone riverbeds have been rehabilitated; and 21 kilometers of drainage and water diversion systems have been cleaned. Water throughput capacity has been increased at 54 road sections, and four hydraulic structures have been repaired. Local executive bodies have formed material, technical, and financial reserves, and approximately 1.2 million cubic meters of snow have been removed. Special monitoring covers 139 settlements in seven districts and four cities of the region that are potentially at risk of flooding, as well as 130 flood-prone sections of highways and railways. A total of 217 water management facilities are under constant monitoring.
At present, the flood situation in the region remains stable. Major reservoirs are operating under normal conditions. Controlled water discharges are being carried out at the Samarkand and Intumak reservoirs. Today, the national command-and-staff exercise “Koktem-2026” began, focusing on preparedness and response to potential adverse flood developments during the spring period. The Ministry for Emergency Situations has inspected the readiness of the regional alert system.
From March 1, to prevent emergencies, all forces and resources of the territorial civil protection subsystem will be placed on high alert. A total of 3,579 personnel and 1,047 units of equipment have been mobilized for response.
