Kazakhstan to ban sugar exports by end of summer

This measure will fully meet the demand of Kazakhstan citizens for sugar in the coming summer season.

At a meeting of the Interdepartmental Commission on Foreign Trade Policy and Participation in International Economic Organisations, held on 6 May under the chairmanship of Deputy Prime Minister Serik Zhumangarin, considered the issue of providing the domestic market with sugar for the coming season, before the new harvest of sugar beet.

Currently, the balance of sugar stocks in warehouses and the volume of imports into Kazakhstan is about 256 thousand tonnes, which is half of the country's annual demand (500-550 thousand tonnes).

"Stocks of sugar and raw cane in warehouses today amount to 136 thousand tonnes. Together with the quota for the import of Russian sugar in the amount of 120 thousand tonnes until August 31, 2024, this is about 256 thousand tonnes. In addition, Kazakhstan has a quota for duty-free import of 300 thousand tonnes of raw cane for processing until the end of 2024. The average monthly consumption is 46,000 tonnes, with summer demand reaching 60,000 tonnes.  The available sugar reserves are more than enough to meet the demand for sugar until the new harvest," Deputy Agriculture Minister Yerbol Taszhurekov said.

In the near future, the Kazakhstani side plans to hold talks with Russian colleagues to increase the quota for Russian sugar supplies by another 100,000 tonnes by the end of the year.  At the same time, in order to ensure uninterrupted supply of sugar to Kazakhstanis at the meeting of the IMC, a collegial decision was made to introduce a temporary ban on sugar exports from Kazakhstan to third countries, including EAEU member states, until 31 August 2024. This measure will not affect international transit.
