A decrease in accident rates has been recorded across the national highway network this year. Compared to the same period last year, the number of road traffic accidents dropped by 10%, the death toll by 14%, and the number of injured by 11%. This was reported at the Government session by Minister of Transport Nurlan Sauranbayev.

According to the ministry, the main cause of accidents remains non-compliance with traffic rules by drivers. Key crash factors include speeding (35%), failure to maintain a safe distance (12%), loss of vehicle control (11%), and crossing into oncoming lanes (8%).

To reduce these factors, the Ministry of Transport, together with the Ministry of Internal Affairs, is implementing a comprehensive set of accident prevention measures. Special attention is paid to monitoring average travel speed. Today, this project operates on 2,800 km of toll roads, resulting in a 10% decrease in traffic accidents on these sections.

As part of efforts to strengthen control over vehicle technical condition and passenger transport, strict measures have been taken against vehicle inspection centers. Obtaining a special permit is now required to launch operations, fines for violations have been increased from 30 to 100 MCI (Monthly Calculation Index), and centers conducting fraudulent technical inspections face suspension for up to 3 years. This eliminates the operation of vehicles that do not meet safety requirements.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and transport platforms Yandex Kazakhstan and inDrive, about 70,000 right-hand drive vehicles have already been excluded from passenger transportation. To further enhance safety, legislative amendments are being drafted to completely ban the use of converted right-to-left-hand drive cars as taxis, as well as to increase the direct accountability of taxi aggregators.

In addition, the ministry is systematically working to improve road infrastructure safety. Over 11,000 km of national highways have been upgraded to technical Categories I and II, reducing the risk of head-on collisions. Sixty-five bypass routes around populated areas have been built to divert transit traffic, 38 pedestrian crossings have been erected to separate vehicle and pedestrian streams, and reconstruction work continues on 1,500 km of highways to divide oncoming traffic flows.
