Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan Olzhas Bektenov took part in the 17th Summit of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), held in the city of Khankendi, Azerbaijan.
The summit was attended by the Presidents of Azerbaijan, Türkiye, Iran, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan; the Prime Minister of Pakistan; the Deputy Prime Minister of Afghanistan; and the Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan. Representatives of several international organizations also participated, including the Organization of Turkic States (OTS), the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA), TRACECA (Transport Corridor Europe–Caucasus–Asia), the United Nations (UN), and UNESCAP (United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific), among others.
The agenda of the summit focused on strengthening economic cooperation among ECO member states. Particular attention was given to collaboration in transport and logistics, energy, climate security, digital transformation, and other areas.
On the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov held a bilateral meeting with Deputy Prime Minister of Afghanistan Abdul Ghani Baradar. The parties discussed opportunities for developing cooperation in trade and economy, transport and logistics, and agriculture.
Olzhas Bektenov noted that, under the initiative of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Kazakhstan is ready to invest in the construction of the “Turgundi–Herat” railway.
“Afghanistan is a bridge between Central and South Asia. The construction of the Trans-Afghan railway will promote development across the entire region. The Government of Kazakhstan reaffirms its commitment to implementing this project, and a corresponding memorandum will be signed between the parties in the near future,” the Prime Minister stated.
