Cooperation Between the Government of Kazakhstan and UNFPA Discussed at Government House

Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan Olzhas Bektenov held a meeting with Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Diene Keita.

The meeting focused on cooperation in healthcare, maternal and child health, reproductive health, and support for women and youth.

“President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev attaches great importance to comprehensive cooperation with the United Nations. The Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan is ready to further expand partnership with the United Nations Population Fund in line with our national priorities. The work of the UNFPA Country Office in Astana organically complements the large-scale socio-economic reforms being implemented in Kazakhstan. Through joint efforts, we are building a more just and inclusive society,” Olzhas Bektenov emphasized.

The Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of UNFPA, in turn, conveyed greetings on behalf of the Head of State and highly praised Kazakhstan’s achievements in the social sphere, emphasizing the Fund’s readiness to continue providing expert support for the country’s strategic initiatives.

“The United Nations was created for three main goals: peace, security, and sustainable development. Kazakhstan’s policy fully aligns with these principles. The reduction in maternal mortality demonstrates how much attention is paid in the country to women and the population, while care for youth, education, and healthcare deserves high praise. At UNFPA, we intend to continue close cooperation with Kazakhstan. I would like to separately note the new Constitution of Kazakhstan, which places human rights and freedom of choice at its center — this principle is especially important today in the era of global change. Your country consistently demonstrates what sustainable and human-centered development can look like,” Diene Keita emphasized.

The UNFPA representative also noted the high level of technological equipment and the introduction of AI solutions in Kazakhstan’s healthcare system. During her visit to a city hospital in Astana, Diene Keita highlighted the modern equipment of the medical facility, noting that it meets the standards of leading world clinics.

For reference: According to the Ministry of Healthcare of the Republic of Kazakhstan, over the past 5 years, maternal mortality rates have decreased by 35%, and infant mortality by 25%. The country is implementing the comprehensive program “Anar Saulygy” aimed at strengthening the health of expectant mothers. There are 90 Youth Health Centers operating in the regions.
