Opening of the Magzhan Zhumabayev Scientific and Cultural Center: A New Landmark of Spiritual Revival

In Petropavlovsk, the first scientific and cultural hub in Kazakhstan, “Mağjan Ortalyğy”, dedicated to the great poet, philosopher, and educator Magzhan Zhumabayev, has opened.

The new center is designed to be not only a place of remembrance, but also a modern intellectual space where scientific research, cultural and educational programs, international dialogues, and creative projects will be conducted. The opening of the center became a vivid symbol of the cultural and spiritual revival of the North Kazakhstan Region and one of the key events in a series of international activities taking place in the region from August 11 to 17.

The ceremony was attended by Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan Yermek Kosherbayev, Minister of Science and Higher Education Sayasat Nurbek, representatives of the Ministry of Culture and Information, the leadership of the International Turkic Culture and Heritage Organization, the head of the region Gauyez Nurmukhametov, as well as members of the public.

“Honoring historical figures is not just our duty, it is the spiritual pillar of independence and the solid foundation of national identity. The opening of the Center dedicated to the outstanding figure Magzhan Zhumabayev is a significant event for the entire country. He once said: ‘Men jastarga senemin’‘I believe in the young.’ Today, his invaluable legacy – the poems ‘Batyr Bayan’, ‘Korkyt’, the textbook ‘Pedagogy’, and other works – continues to instill patriotism, love for the Motherland, and a sense of responsibility for its future. This center is intended to convey Magzhan’s spirit and ideas to young people, inspiring them to think boldly, act with dignity, and remain faithful to their land,” Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan Yermek Kosherbayev emphasized.

The interior space of “Mağjan Ortalyğy” reflects the multifaceted personality of the poet and the scale of his creative heritage. A recreation of Magzhan Zhumabayev’s study has been set up with household items and furnishings similar to those in which he lived and worked. A conference hall is equipped for holding various events, and a modern library operates with works by Magzhan, printed editions, and collections of books by prominent Kazakhstani and foreign writers and poets. A room for studying archival documents and the editorial office of the “Mağjan” journal is functioning. There is also a creative space for the intelligentsia and the literary club “Mağjan Tanu”, where meetings, discussions, and thematic evenings will be held.

“We are sincerely grateful for the creation of this center. For us, as relatives of Magzhan Zhumabayev, this has special significance. It is very important that the memory of such outstanding figures is preserved and passed on to future generations. I believe that the state is moving in the right direction, as we do not forget and continue to honor the work of our ancestors,” Dulat Bekenev shared the writer’s relative.

“Today marks a significant event – the opening of ‘Mağjan Ortalyğy’. This is a joyful and important moment for all of us. If we want to raise young people in the spirit of Magzhan, such a spiritual center must exist. ‘Mağjan Ortalyğy’ is not just a place where you can get acquainted with his works – here young people will be able to study the poet’s legacy more deeply. The center will become a place of studying his heritage, publishing the ‘Mağjan’ journal, operating a youth club, and hosting a meeting hall. This place will help gain a deeper understanding of the poet’s heritage. We hope the center will become beloved by people,” the director of “Mağjan Ortalyğy” and editor-in-chief of the “Mağjan” journal, Zharasbay Suleymenov, noted.

The center is located in a 19th-century architectural monument of republican significance that underwent large-scale restoration. During the work, rare fragments of 19th-century fresco painting were discovered and restored, adding special historical value to the space. The artistic design was created by Bolat Aserbekov, a member of the Union of Artists of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and the work was carried out with the support of the Turkic Culture and Heritage Foundation.

Next to the center, on the initiative of local entrepreneurs and a Turkish philanthropist, a modern park with the “Mağjan” art composition was created.

“For us, the people of North Kazakhstan, Magzhan Zhumabayev is not only a national treasure but also our regional pride, our cultural DNA. Magzhan’s name is respected not only in Kazakhstan – he is honored in Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and especially in Turkey. I sincerely thank everyone who contributed to the creation of this Center. I am confident that ‘Mağjan Ortalyğy’ will become a point of attraction not only for the residents of the region but also for guests from all over the country and abroad,” the akim of the region noted, Gauyez Nurmukhametov.

The opening of “Mağjan Ortalyğy” became not only a tribute to the great poet but also a step in implementing state policy aimed at strengthening cultural identity, developing tourism, and promoting Kazakhstan internationally as a center of spiritual and cultural heritage.
