First Kazakhstan-Afghan Educational and Research Center for Water Resources Management to Be Established in Kabul

The relevant Memorandum of Intent on cooperation in the field of water resources and irrigation management, as well as the development of sustainable agriculture in the context of climate change, was signed by the Kazakh National University of Water Management and Irrigation, the Kazakh National Agrarian Research University, and Kabul University. The document was signed as part of the visit of the Kazakh delegation to Afghanistan, headed by Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of National Economy Serik Zhumangarin.

The center is planned to be established on the basis of Kabul University. It will become the first Kazakh-Afghan educational and research institution specializing in water resources, irrigation, and sustainable agriculture. The new platform will contribute to the training of specialists, knowledge exchange, joint research, and the implementation of modern solutions in the water and agricultural sector. Educational programs and scientific support will be provided by Kazakh scientists and experts.

Speaking at the Kazakhstan-Afghan business forum, Serik Zhumangarin emphasized that Kazakhstan pays special attention to issues of water diplomacy, rational use of water resources, and strengthening regional cooperation in this area.

It is expected that the Center will develop as an inter-university research platform combining such areas as water security, sustainable agriculture, climate adaptation, environmental monitoring, and food security. The comprehensive approach will make it possible to develop practical solutions for the sustainable development of the region.

Kabul University is the oldest and largest public higher education institution in Afghanistan, founded in 1932. The university comprises 22 faculties and has a broad academic base for interdisciplinary cooperation.
